Cruising Along at Increased Workout Frequency

A quick update, since the last post 4 days ago I’ve been keeping up the consistency and I’m starting to feel really good. My last rest day was 2 days ago and I’ve kept up the 2 days on, one day off cycle. Now that my month at Orange Theory has rolled over and the monthly class count has reset, I’m going to have to switch things up a bit, that or just go for the unlimited plan.

My Journey So Far: Crunching the Numbers

Baker by the Pound started just over two years ago and what a journey it as been. After much number crunching from my workout/weight log it really brought many things into perspective.

Look at this guy after his first workout at Orange Theory, feet standing outward, huffing and puffing after his first workout in years. The journey from this guy to what I am now has been long and full of ups and downs, but one thing’s for sure: I’ve learned a ton about myself, my body, and my abilities.

For me it started with a “what the heck, why not,” instead of a lightbulb motivating moment.

Check In: More of the Same, but Different….

Now that we’re 10 days into the new year, I’m actually in somewhat a groove and thought I would check in quickly to document where things are right now. I’ve finally undone the damage done over holiday eating and I’m falling back into good habits.

In other words things are the same as last I checked in, however, for some reason things feel a bit different right now. Continue reading “Check In: More of the Same, but Different….”

Forced Focus: Nutrition and Gut Health

In my last post I talked a lot about changing my mindset to focus more on nutrition instead of training. Well, seems like my gut health has forced me to focus on this issue, at least that’s the silver lining I’m attempting to make from this current situation.

Some of you may remember I posted back in August how I contracted a bad stomach bug after traveling overseas. I recovered after a couple weeks, although I only got to maybe 90% healthy. A couple weeks ago I realized that it’s been 3 MONTHS since the trip and I’m still not 100%.

It doesn’t affect my day-to-day activity, however, if my body hasn’t fixed it by now then it’s time to get some help.

I have to remember that my goal isn’t to lose weight or get strong, it’s to get healthy. Gut health is extremely important to your overall health, so I went see the doctor.

The doctor didn’t seem worried at all and explained that sometimes bacterial infections can linger. So he wrote me a prescription for an antibiotic and I was on my way. Continue reading “Forced Focus: Nutrition and Gut Health”

Random Thoughts, New Goals, New Focus

Now that it’s been a week since my Hot Chocolate 5k triumph, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking (as I normally do). This post will be much less structured than normal and will be a mish-mash of everything I’ve been thinking about as I move forward setting new goals on the next stage on the journey. Wrap-Up: April 2016

It’s about time I started these again! I’ve been putting it off because of the shame of the weight I’ve gained back. Speaking of, we have a new geeky reference for my slip-ups. Joining the Oregon Trail wagon bursting into flames I present to you, the Shame Nun from Game of Thrones!

SHAME!
SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! (DING-DING)

Now that that’s out of the way and I’ve faced the music (because of the bell, get it?!?!) Let’s begin this recap of my current status. Continue reading “Wrap-Up: April 2016”

Reading Labels

As part of the weight loss challenge, the head trainer at the gym, Will have us a grocery store tour at our local Trader Joe’s. This was pretty sweet, a real life “eat this, not that” type of thing with a person there to answer all of my questions.

Some real interesting tid bits I learned from this:

– Read the labels, this seems obvious, but as someone that works in marketing it’s very believable to see how deceiving the front of any packaging can be. You have to put in the foot work, read exactly how much is in everything. It takes time, but it really is worth it, it’s insane how much salt, sugar, and fat is added to pretty much EVERYTHING.

– It’s also about quality. While looking at the number portion is important, also look at the ingredients. My overall goal is to become healthy in each way, so it’s really about the quality of the food I eat and not just quantity and calories. Just like above with everything else, it’s amazing how many chemicals and preservatives are added to everything.

– On that note…for snacks, I’ve stopped eating the individual fruit at the bottom of the cup greek yogurt. Because there’s a ton of chemicals added to keep it fresh and preventing it from mixing with the rest of the yogurt, for presentation purposes! For pretty much the same cost, I can buy a tub of greek yogurt, a package of fruit and add it myself, and now I’m not eating fruit flavored chemicals at the same price!

He gave a lot of little nutritional tips that will really help me out and take my game up and get me back on a larger losing trail. Time to completely redo my grocery list and rethink what I’m going to cook in the next few weeks!
